Join us on a two day sail from Two Harbors, MN, where the Abbey Road will have participated in the 2022 Festival of Sail to Bayfield, WI. We expect to be sailing with other tall ships as they travel to other ports.
Under the command of a licensed captain, trainees will actively participate in the operation of the ship. They will live, cook, eat and sleep on board the Abbey Road while exploring Lake Superior. By the end of a voyage they will know the fundamentals of how to sail a 60' schooner.
Everyone is involved in planning the passage. The captain will review navigation procedures, use of charts, dead reckoning, radar, and GPS in an easy to understand and relaxed environment. This exciting adventure covers about 100 nautical miles (weather depending) with a stop overnight at one of the Apostle Islands.
We have room for 6 trainees over the age of 13, who are willing to stand watch, tend the sails, and steer a steady course as we transit Lake Superior to the distant shore. We highly recommend you have some prior sailing experience to prepare for this long-distance cruise.
You may board the Abbey Road in Two Harbors any time after 8 pm on August 7th, and we will depart the next day.
We plan to cross the big lake from the North Shore on August 8th and arrive in the Apostle Islands in the afternoon. We will spend the night anchored in the shelter of the islands, and then sail to Bayfield on August 9th, arriving at Pikes Bay Marina about 4pm.
You will need to arrange your own transportation to Two Harbors and from Bayfield.
